Sensitive Skincare Tips

If you have sensitive skin, you are probably no stranger to taking extra steps to care for your skin and paying close attention to what your skin loves. Sensitive skin is often more reactive to products, sun, dryness, and over-exfoliation, so if you find this is the case with your skin, it is worth taking those steps to be extra mindful with skincare. After all, taking tender care to learn your sensitive skin and what works well with it, while also pivoting as necessary is essential for sensitive skin.

Here are some golden rules to follow if you have sensitive skin, to help keep it from flaring up and causing discomfort:

Use products specifically designed for sensitive skin

There are many skincare products on the market, and luckily there are plenty of options tailored for sensitive skin. Common words you’ll see for sensitive skin products are “gentle” and “natural”. For example, there is an entire line such as the Blue Lagoon treatments for sensitive skin that are both effective and fun to use!

Always apply moisturizer

Moisturizer is a critical step for sensitive skin to replenish the skin with hydration and offer soothing benefits. A rich moisturizer is often the best pick for sensitive skin, though it may take some trial and error to learn what works best with your unique skin.

Avoid products with fragrance and heavy metals

Fragrance and heavy metals are just unnecessary in skincare products and they can cause extra stress on the skin. So before applying, check the ingredients list on your products!

Always remove makeup before going to sleep

We always hear about how critical removing sunscreen and makeup is before going to sleep, and for sensitive skin this is a step you certainly don’t want to miss. Your skin recovers during the night, so give it the best chance possible for a great next day with a clean face and soothing products overnight.

Avoid mechanical exfoliation

Mechanical exfoliation with tools for cleansing the skin as well as products with exfoliating ingredients can be way too harsh for sensitive skin. Since they are all over the skincare market they can be tempting to pick up, but using a chemical exfoliant is the better option for sensitive skin to avoid stressing sensitive skin too much.

Always apply high SPF sunscreen

Daily application of sunscreen is essential for every skin type, but if you have sensitive skin, this is a particularly critical step. Sun damage can cause extreme stress and damage on the skin and take significant time to recover from. So take those preventative steps to protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen and apply and reapply throughout the day!

Remember, the key to healthy and happy skin is to be mindful of what you put on your skin and to not overdo it! While it can be tempting to continue to add on products and add more to your skin, this can actually cause more stress and the opposite of what is intended. So strip it back, follow those golden rules and do what is necessary for your skin but not too much!

My wife uses a lot of skincare products and I always wonder whether the products she is using are completely safe or not as we don’t have enough knowledge about those products. By reading your blog, I got a lot of information. Thanks a lot.
