How to Still Celebrate Milestones in 2020

It is hard to believe that August is upon us already. We are rapidly hurtling towards Fall, and the celebrations that we are used to having over the warm summer months, from graduations to Father’s Day and birthdays have looked very different this year. Normally, these festivities and milestones are celebrated with hoards of family and friends, and now – well, it’s all a bit socially distanced. However, these are all still things that need celebrating, and with a bit of thinking outside of the box, you can still make them an occasion to be remembered.

The most important part of a meaningful celebration is to make it unique to the person you are celebrating. If they have a special interest, passion, or personality trait, make sure you address it in your celebrations.

Here, we look at some of the ways that you can celebrate an important milestone in 2020 – while keeping safe at the same time.

Have a Bespoke Item Made

If you are celebrating something such as a big wedding anniversary, a birth, or a special birthday, why not have a piece of custom jewelry made? It is something completely unique and can be personalized exactly to the recipient’s tastes.

You could also think about commissioning a piece of art or a sculpture, or something that really aligns with the tastes and personality of the person that you are giving it to.

Set Up a Drive By

Rally around the friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors of the person you are hoping to celebrate with and get them to drive by the house. Perhaps they could decorate their cars with ribbons and honk the horns or play ‘happy birthday’ or an appropriate song loud on their car stereo as they drive by and wave. Obviously, make sure you adhere to any local traffic laws and noise nuisance regulations, and you probably will want to warn the neighbors, but it can be a fun and memorable way to mark the occasion.

Have a Zoom Party

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have all found clever ways to stay in touch, and one of these has been through video calls. Of course, this isn’t a new concept, but everyone from Granny and Grandpa to your boss is using Zoom or other video calling services to stay in touch. Zoom allows up to 100 of you to take part in a call together, so make sure everyone has a cocktail and decorates their background, play some music, and have a virtual party! There are plenty of games that you can play on there as well – everyone loves a good ol’ quiz.

Have a Scavenger Hunt or a Treasure Hunt

Remember when you were little and your parents would set up a scavenger hunt or an egg hunt? How much fun was that? There is absolutely no reason why you can’t do one for an adult. In fact, they can be even more fun! Plan a scavenger hunt – you could even look at geocaching works and see if you can implement that into your hunt somehow. The clues and trail could lead to a big gift or a group of socially distanced friends and family.

Have a Socially Distanced Picnic In The Park

In some areas, you can have gatherings in the park or in your back or front yard as long as households stay an appropriate distance from one another. A picnic is a perfect way to do this – every household or group brings their own picnic blanket to sit on away from others and their own food, and you can celebrate while staying safe.

Plan for When Things Are Over

While it feels never-ending at the moment, there will be a time when things return to almost normal, so focus your energy on planning something for then. Sometimes half of the fun is in the planning and preparation, so with this much notice, think of the fun you can have on Pinterest plotting and gathering ideas.

The COVID-19 pandemic really has thrown life as we know it upside down and stopped many of us from celebrating big events in the way that we usually would. However, a bit of creativity and imagination and you can have as much fun – if not more – as normal, and even if you don’t, it will be an experience to look back on in the future and talk about it!
