Why Cocoa Butter is Good for Dry Skin

If you’re anything like me, I dread the winter not only because of the cold, but also because my skin tends to become the driest it can be, turning it flaky, chalky, and in some cases, irritated. I’ve tried almost every ingredient in skincare that swears to cure dry skin, and I still haven’t found a better remedy than cocoa butter.

What is Cocoa Butter and How is it Made?

Outside of the tasty ingredient found in your chocolate-y desserts, cocoa butter is commonly incorporated into a lot of beauty and health products like skincare. Cocoa butter is a type of vegetable fat extracted from the cocoa beans in the cacao plant. Similar to how coffee is made, the beans are then roasted, stripped, and pressed to extract the fat – namely, the cocoa butter. The remainders are then made into cocoa powder. Then, the cocoa butter is mixed into formulas of various lotions, moisturizers, oils, and balms, in turn providing many natural benefits to your skin.

The Benefits of Cocoa Butter For Skin

Rich in Antioxidants

Cocoa butter has a high concentration of antioxidants, which help fight off free-radical damage to the skin. Free radicals are the main culprit of dullness, dark patches, and aging of the skin. Because of its antioxidants, applying cocoa butter products can help restore your skin’s youthfulness and health. Studies also have shown that cocoa’s antioxidants aid in reducing inflammation and sun damage to the skin.

In addition to having a lot of antioxidants, cocoa butter is also a stable fat that is highly concentrated in saturated fats. With these two ingredients combined, cocoa butter actually has an extremely long shelf life ranging from two to five years.

Reduces Stretch Marks and Scars

Although there is no scientific proof of cocoa butter eliminating stretch marks and scars, many doctors and women alike recommend cocoa butter to help reduce the appearance of them, especially during and after pregnancy. Cocoa butter contains a good amount of Vitamin E and other deep-penetrating moisturizers, so by nature, continual use of it will gradually improve your skin’s nourishment and hydration.

Is an Effective Moisturizer for Dry Skin

Cocoa butter is great at moisturizing dry skin on your body and your lips. Because it’s comprised of a lot of fatty acids, cocoa butter naturally forms a protective barrier, preventing moisture from escaping and drying the skin out. As a personal sufferer of winter eczema and dermatitis, cocoa butter has also helped in relieving the dryness as a result of these skin conditions.

Where to Shop for Cocoa Butter

Now, onto my favorite line of cocoa butter products: Palmer’s! What better place to look than at a skincare brand that has a line completely dedicated to cocoa butter? I have been using the Moisturizing Body Oil, Lotion, and Swivel Stick and I am completely in love with the products and the results I’m seeing. And here is why:

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Moisturizing Body Oil

Oh my heaven – if you want the best and effective formula for really locking in moisture, you must try Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Moisturizing Body Oil. Mixed with Vitamin E, this oil really provides 24-hour moisture and quickly absorbs into the skin without all the greasiness. Plus, the smell is absolutely amazing so it’s like you’re giving yourself a treat during the application. I use this right on my damp skin after I shower, and you can also use this directly poured into your bath!

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Lotion

I’m a sucker for body lotion, and Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Lotion is probably one of the best ones I own. Because I have super dry skin, I use this lotion every time after I shower to provide deep hydration all over my skin and to prevent it from drying out. The lotion actually induces a protective barrier that locks in moisture and it’s great for normal to dry to eczema-prone skin. It’s no wonder why it’s dermatologist recommended!

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick

As I had stated above, I have very dry skin, and unfortunately, it has also carried onto my lips, which are just as equally cracked and chapped. During the winter season, I definitely need to apply the best and most effective lip balms in the market, and Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick is the perfect remedy. Although it is ideal for lips, I’ve found that I can use the Swivel Stick for other dry patches on my body and also to smooth out my flyaways in my hair!

And let’s talk about the packaging. Palmer’s Swivel Stick comes in an easy-to-open container that I can quickly swipe some balm on my lips on-the-go! I love how the bottle is wider than the standard lip balm tube so the cocoa butter actually can reach the top and bottom of each of your lips in one swipe. It’s so easy to use!

Choosing Palmer’s for Cocoa Butter

A family-owned business founded more than 175 years ago, it’s no surprise why Palmer’s stays true to its brand in its offering of high-quality, affordable, and natural ingredients that really work. Palmer’s is known for its Cocoa Butter Formula and it has remained the #1 Cocoa Butter brand in the US for many years. As you can see, even my pups love the smell of the products and it is even safe for them to lick off my skin thanks to Palmer’s nontoxic and natural ingredients :-).
