How I Clean My Makeup Brushes

I'm sharing my favorite makeup brush cleaning products!

Makeup Brushes in a container

Do you clean your makeup brushes often enough? Recently I was talking to some friends, and I was shocked to find out how many people overlook this crucial step. Not only is it essential for your skin, but it also serves as basic hygiene!

Contrary to popular belief, you actually don’t have to spend a crazy amount of time devoting yourself to this task. With the help of some fantastic products, I have gotten my routine down as quick and easy as possible!

Why You Should Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Over time, brushes can accumulate bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil. These things can not only clog your pores, but they can also lead to breakouts. The more you clean your brushes, the less acne-causing bacteria you are spreading on your skin.

In addition to the obvious skin benefits, clean makeup brushes also apply makeup better. Dirty brushes can leave your foundation, blush, and any liquid or powder application streaky on your face. And we don’t want that, right? Make sure to clean your brushes to ensure a smoother makeup application :-).

How Often Should You Clean Your Makeup Brushes?

On average, dermatologists recommend that you should clean each makeup brush at least every 7-10 days, especially those brushes that you use more often like foundation and concealer brushes. Ones that you use less often, like the ones for your eyes, should be cleaned at least twice a month.

My Must-Have Makeup Brush Cleaning Products

Dry Makeup Brush Quick Cleaner Sponge

Dry Makeup Brush Quick Cleaner Sponge

To start off my makeup brush cleaning routine, I use a dry cleaner sponge each time I use a different brush. This product is amazing for everyday cleaning, and you don’t need any soap or water (or even much time!) to use it efficiently. Also, this sponge allows you to switch colors easily without the need to keep switching brushes. All you have to do is brush gently against the sponge surface, and it removes pigment instantaneously. I love it because it makes deep cleaning your brushes a little easier by reducing product build-up.

Cleaning Makeup Brushes on a Silicone Brush Cleaning Mat

When you are looking for that deep clean, using a silicone brush mat can be very useful! All you do is rinse the brushes in water, add a gentle soap/cleanser (like this Johnson & Johnson one I love! or the Sigma ), and lightly rub the brushes against the mat. The textures on the mat help to work out any makeup residue, and voila!, you are left with clean brushes.

Silicone Brush Cleaning Mat

Sigma Beauty Sigmatic Brushampoo Liquid

Everyone needs a good brush cleanser that will really do the job, and I am loving this one from Sigma Beauty! The natural formula of this cleanser dissolves built-up product, oil, and harmful bacteria, and leaves your brushes feeling like new. All I do is pump the formula directly into my brush and lather, rinse, and repeat till it’s clean!

Johnson and Johnson Soap for cleaning your brushes

Johnson & Johnson Moisture Care Baby Wash

Another good alternative for cleansing soap is Johnson & Johnson’s Moisture Care Baby Wash. This soap is super gentle and the formula contains baby lotion so it won’t dry out your brush bristles. If you use any sort of regular hand soap, the chemicals will be too harsh on the bristles, making them stiff and also fall out. The bristles will no longer be soft on your face and your makeup application will not be as smooth!

Makeup Brush Drying Rack

Makeup Brush Drying Rack

It’s always such a pain having to deal with wet brushes, so luckily, there are brush drying racks! I love using this drying rack as it is super affordable and it does the job well. This drying rack has 28 mixed-size silicone holes that can fit for all sizes of makeup brushes. It is very convenient, it dries the brushes quickly, and it won’t take up too much space on your bathroom counter. In addition, it keeps everything neat and organized while I’m waiting for the brushes to dry.
