Building a Healthier Skincare Routine

My top tips for a cleaner skincare routine!
At this time of year, it’s easy for our skin to become damaged and sore. Harsh winds and cold temperatures can lead to dry, flaky patches, and suffering from a cold can leave you with very sore lips and nose. You might also wear more makeup around the holidays, as you attend more events and parties than usual. Greasy comfort food won’t help either.
But, with the right skincare routine, your skin doesn’t have to suffer. Take good care of it, and it will be healthy, youthful and bright, no matter how bad the weather gets.
Find a Healthy Brand Avoiding Harsh Chemicals
Unfortunately, many makeup brands are filled with chemicals and unhealthy ingredients. Some of these may even be tested on animals. Try to shop vegan makeup products, which are natural, good for your skin and kind to the planet.
Take Your Makeup Off
Even if you use a completely natural makeup brand, and wear a primer to protect your skin, it still needs a break. Sleep in your makeup and your pores will become clogged and your skin greasy. Take your makeup off with a gentle cleanser every night to give it a rest.
Give Your Face Days Off
If possible, take whole days off makeup. Cleanse when you get up, apply a facial moisturizer and then leave your face bare. Or, if you really need to, add a little foundation to your moisturizer instead of applying a much thicker layer.
Drink More Water
One of the healthiest things you can do for your skin is keeping it hydrated. Drink plenty of water, carrying a bottle with you and sipping throughout the day to improve your skin tone and reduce the risk of spots and premature aging.
Stop Squeezing and Plucking
On the other hand, perhaps the most unhealthy thing that you can do for your skin is squeezing, picking and plucking at it. When we squeeze spots, we spread bacteria, often leading to more spots. Plucking, picking and squeezing can also leave red marks and even cause lasting damage. Leave spots alone, and get your eyebrows threaded instead if you want to neaten them up.
Watch What You Eat
Your diet has a massive effect on your skin. If you eat greasy, unhealthy foods, your skin will become oily, and you’ll get spot outbreaks. If you eat healthy, hydrating food that’s filled with vitamins and minerals, your skin will look healthy and youthful.
Wear Sunscreen
Sunscreen is an essential all year round for your skincare routine. Even if it’s cold, if the sun is shining, you are being exposed to harmful UV rays. Wear sunscreen on any skin that’s uncovered when you are outdoors, or find makeup and moisturizers with added SPF.
It’s important to remember, however, that we’re all different, and that our skin changes over time. As we age, our skin starts to have different needs, and your skin tone can even change throughout the month, as your hormone levels fluctuate. Take your time to make changes to your routine, giving changes time to work, before adding others. This will make it easier for you to build a routine that works for you.
And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed my top hacks for building a better skincare routine. All of these tips & tricks have helped me tremendously, and I hope that they help you just the same!
