What Is Microdermabrasion and Electroporation, and Does It Work?

The inside scoop on what the procedure is
What is Microdermabrasion?
Needles on your face? Crystals? Pain? What exactly IS microdermabrasion, does it hurt, and does it work?
Luckily for YOU guys, I happen to be a skincare fanatic and I was able to trust my local skin spa and experts at Esthetica MD to test out this procedure.
Definition
A lot of people have heard the term “microdermabrasion” get thrown around, but many have absolutely no clue what it is! Well, let me tell you. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that uses tiny crystals to exfoliate surface skin and get rid of dry and dead skin cells. According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and SkinPen, “microdermabrasion is one of the top five non-surgical procedures performed by medical providers.” It’s no wonder my skin felt so smooth after my session!
There are other at-home products like the PMD Personal Microderm Device for you to try out if you are not ready to take the plunge, but they are not nearly as effective as the ones performed by aestheticians with better grade equipment and products.
My Microdermabrasion & Electroporation Session with Esthetica MD
I get so excited whenever I go to Esthetica MD for my skin and facial treatments. The place is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and the quality of the sessions is phenomenal.
I had a bit of time beforehand to have some freshly-brewed coffee in the beautiful waiting room with Esthetica’s signature silver leather couch. A few moments later, my aesthetician, Cindy, walked me to my room and informed me that I was receiving the Meso Treatment. According to the website, I was going to get “a selection of light peel microdermabrasion or enzyme treatment to prep the skin for revitalization using electroporation to deliver therapeutic ingredients.”
I was a bit worried at first because I had to be on SocialFly’s Facebook Live (article here) the next morning and I didn’t want my face to be swollen, but Cindy swore it wouldn’t be. She said the treatment was pretty gentle and there was no swelling or redness I couldn’t cover up with makeup. With a sigh of relief, I changed into my robe and laid down in the bed.

The Procedure
First, Cindy gave me the typical facial where she removed all the makeup off my face, put a hot towel to open my pores, and scrubbed lightly with a sponge to exfoliate and take off any remaining dirt from my face. As she let my face dry, she loaded a syringe with vitamin ACE and peptides and started the microdermabrasion. As she was rolling the hand-held apparatus that sprayed the microcrystals across my face to remove the outer layer of my skin, she was simultaneously releasing the vitamin ACE so my pores could absorb the serum. There wasn’t much pain – the microdermabrasion just felt like someone was continuously scratching my face, but because I knew it was healthy for my skin, I became used to the feeling in no time.

Alginate Mask and Electroporation
After the microdermabrasion, the icing on the cake came next. Cindy finished off my facial treatment by giving me an Alginate based Peel-Off Mask. The mask was going to tighten my enlarged pores, improve blood circulation, increase oxygen supply, make my skin more elastic and radiant, and help soothe my skin from the treatment. To make the process even cooler than it already was, Cindy added some electroporation to further the benefits of the mask. Through this process, tiny pulses of electricity briefly opened the pores in the cell membranes to allow for better absorption.
In terms of how the Alginate Mask felt, it really just felt like cool cake batter was being poured all over my face! (Too bad it didn’t taste like cake though 😉 ). It did not make me feel claustrophobic at all, and you can always opt out of the mask being poured over your eyes to make you feel more comfortable. I even felt the tiny pulses of electricity throughout my face!

Conclusion
Overall, the Meso Treatment from Esthetica MD (microdermabrasion, alginate mask and electroporation) was amazing. Writing this blog post a few weeks after, I can definitely say that within a day or two after the treatment, my skin was glowing, refreshed, and a bit more plump. Speaking of which, I definitely need to book my next appointment ASAP!
