Why You Should Watch Crazy Rich Asians
And That You Should Tell Everybody You Know
Crazy Rich Asians: Why You Need to Watch It Now
Are you ready to make our country equal amongst our people by having the same rights? We’ve made strides for our fellow African Americans, our LGBTQ community and even our marijuana laws. But, what about us folks in between who rarely make appearances in Hollywood or any other American mainstream media? That’s right. I’m talking about us Asian Americans – but I guess you wouldn’t know that we’re missing cuz you haven’t seen us on the screens, right?
Our voices have been muffled by the dominating American culture throughout music, films, TV shows, billboards, and commercials. Spanish, White, and Blacks are diversely represented in music, and as a singer myself, it’s no wonder why it’s so hard to break through this industry. NOT ONE ASIAN AMERICAN is a huge singing star or actor/actress (Lucy Liu, maybe? But, that’s it). The struggle is real, guys. To be the pioneer for your entire race is just met with a lot rejection and to make it is just really really tough.
Pre-Screening of Crazy Rich Asians
Two weeks ago, I was invited to the Crazy Rich Asians pre-screening hosted by Peach & Lily & Warner Brothers. I was SO excited to go – I made sure to clear everything off my schedule so I could attend this event.
And to prove my dedication…Every Wednesday, I have a dedicated 3-hour singing class and lesson that I religiously have been going to for over 10 years (I legit never go to any events or meetings at these times on Wednesdays because the classes are super important to me). However, as soon as I got invited to the pre-screening (which fell on a Wednesday), I immediately cancelled ALL plans, asked my voice teacher to have a double lesson next week (which would made my voice time 5 hours), because I knew I NEEDED to see Crazy Rich Asians.
I knew my attendance was more than just to fill a seat. I was being a part of the MOVEMENT of Asian American representation in Hollywood. It was like casting a vote at the elections, only that this felt more monumental because I felt like my seat really mattered. By being there, I could help make a difference, and as a full-time influencer, I felt like it was my duty to use social media and my blog to document this experience and share with my audience. Can you believe that Crazy Rich Asians is the 1st major studio film in the last 25 YEARS to feature an Asian-American story with all leading roles played by Asians? That to me is unbelievable as we’ve seen all-White casts, all-Hispanic casts, all-Black casts, but none with all-Asian casts…Until now. And now, we have the opportunity to support this change.

Movie Review: Crazy Rich Asians
And onto to the movie review. Wow. Wow. Wow! Crazy Rich Asians is charming, relatable, AND hilarious (even though I’m only “Crazy” and “Asian” ;). Legit, everyone and their friends need to watch this film. Yes, it is a rom-com, but is so much more than that. It exposes the contrast between traditional, wealthy Asian families and the modern Asian American ones who have grown up in the U.S. with different morals. I don’t want to give the movie away, but it is so eye-opening to see the different dynamics and traditions of growing up in a different country even though the ethnicity is the same.
And besides all that, there were so many hysterical, knee-slapping moments, I probably was the loudest person in the Warner Bros. theater. To name specific characters, I absolutely loved the performances of the awkward and sweet Constance Wu, the hilarious Awkwafina, and the bone-chilling Michelle Yeoh. FUN FACT: I actually performed on stage at NYU with Awkwafina and was in the same lineup as her and Dumbfoundead during a Fashion Show! And look at damn far she’s gone! Go her.
Anyways, I’m probably going to go watch this movie again and bring my boyfriend too. And I recommend that you all should head to your local theater and see it as well! The movie was so good and buying a ticket would go to an amazing cause. Actually, a movement. And a stepping stone in the equality that America should want to reach.
Until next time!
