Sunscreen Knowledge: How I Discovered Sun Protection Was Important

intern kasey ma thestylewright
So, here I am…

Hi there! Becky here, intern at TheStyleWright, sharing with you some of my favorite sun protection products!

Sooooo… Here I am

You probably already get the vibe that the sun and I get along pretty well. At least from the “OMG you’re so tan” perspective. This is basically always the case (besides the time I got sun poisoning around my entire mouth in Aruba when I was in 5th grade – YIKES).

But anyways, we all know those people who simply tan while everybody else seems to burn. Well, I’m lucky to be one of those easy-to-tan girls! So, because of all this confidence in my abilities to get the perfect glow, I naturally became a bit too conceited and I have underestimated the abilities of the sun.

Now, with 19 years of tropical vacations, perfect glows, zero-to-none sunscreen use, horrific burns, and a lot in between, my sun-kissed ego has transformed. I learned the hard way that absolutely NOBODY can beat the heat. And although it took time, I have stepped off of my high horse and accepted that protecting your skin is one of the most important and beneficial things you can do for yourself.

And this is why protecting your skin and being knowledgeable of sun damage is the one of the most important things to think about and apply. Luckily, for all of us there are an abundance of products that help maintain healthy skin 🙂

And with that said, here are some highly recommended products that I chose for you guys!!

SUNSCREENS

For Sensitive Skin:beauty counter lips skin sunscreen sunblock suncare kasey ma thestylewright

BeautyCounter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SFP 30

BEAUTYCOUNTER makes sprays, lotions, and even a face stick for your sun protection. This isn’t just any average sunscreen though. BEAUTYCOUNTER uses physical sunscreens also known as mineral sunscreen rather than chemical SPF filters. This swap minimizes a high risk for skin irritation and uses pigments such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that rest on the surface of your skin as a means of directly reflecting the sun’s rays. Since the product lays on top of your skin, BEAUTYCOUNTER sunscreen is perfect for those with high sensitivity.

For Acne-Prone Skin: neutrogena clear face beauty counter lips skin sunscreen sunblock suncare kasey ma thestylewright

Neutrogena Clear Face Break-Out Free Liquid Lotion Sunscreen SPF 30 & SPF 50

This liquid lotion is perfect for those who are prone to acne because it is less likely to clog your pores than other thicker and creamier sunscreens. This oil free sunscreen is ultra-light, won’t cause breakouts, and will allow your skin to breathe!

For Dry Skin:aveeno sensitive skin sunscreen sunblock suncare kasey ma thestylewright

Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Lotion Sunscreen SPF 30

There’s nothing worse than feeling all leathery and dry after a day in the sun. While naturally the sun dries out your skin, some people are prone to dry skin. This lotion hydrates the skin while providing broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. This formula is oil-free and fast-absorbing so it leaves a smooth and hydrated feeling on your face and body without the common oily feel from sunscreens.

For Sun Damage:

NIA24 Damage Prevention Mineral Sunscreen

So this sunscreen is definitely a little bit pricey but certainly worth it. In addition to it being super light on your skin and oil-free, it prevents against commonly seen sun damage like spots and blotches. This lotion strengthens your skin and corrects previous damage from the sun. My mom recently introduced me to this lotion as she is a huge fan. Being 61, my mom has had a lot of sun exposure and has gotten to the point where sun damage is threatening to her. She LOVES this lotion and praises its abilities to both prevent and correct damage.

Moroccan Oil After-Sun Milk

The Moroccan Oil After-Sun Milk is a life saver!!! It literally makes sunburns go away in one day and hydrates your skin to perfection. Another one of Kasey’s favorites. She’s gotten sunburnt 3 times already this summer and she can’t stop bragging about this product.

For All Skin:

Moroccan Oil Sun Lotion SPF 30

This sun lotion is literally perfect for ANY skin type and particularly those with uneven coloring/ blotchy skin. Its light weight and even consistency absorbs into your skin and provides excellent moisture while also protecting you from the sun. The broad spectrum and water-resistant formula helps guard your skin from UVA/UVB rays. Additionally, its light Monoi fragrance is to die for. Kasey uses this as one of her personal favs and she legit made SURE this one made it into the post! The face lotion stick is also AMAZE.

MAKEUP SUN PROTECTION PRODUCTS

One huge common mistake is forgetting sun protection when wearing makeup. Even if you are a user of powders and tinted moisturizers, not all foundations and makeup bases contain enough SPF to protect you from the sun. Instead, SPF moisturizer or “broad spectrum SPF” makeup bases can be used underneath your regular makeup to provide thorough sun protection! Here are some highly recommended makeup sun protectors:

For Over OR Under Your Makeup:

brush on block beauty counter lips skin sunscreen sunblock suncare kasey ma thestylewright

Brush on Block Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

is a broad spectrum SPF  mineral powder sunscreen. This is such a well rounded product and definitely a sun protector necessity. For starters, it is a translucent powder and so it can be applied before or after your makeup (all up to you)! No residue or grease is left behind after use and it is perfect for sensitive skin. Additionally, you can apply this powder along your hairline and scalp (easy places for the sun to reach). Lastly, this small self-dispensable brush is easily portable and can be carried along with you wherever you go!

For Under Your Makeup:

glossir beauty counter lips skin sunscreen sunblock suncare kasey ma thestylewright glossier

Glossier Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF 35

Many people, including myself, are not a fan of the greasy feeling on sunscreen. This product is the exception to that feeling. You literally will have no idea that you are wearing sunscreen because it is so light and absorbs directly into your skin. Its water-gel formula leaves no greasy residue behind, leaving your skin feeling light, airy, and fresh. In addition to protecting against sun damage and skin cancer, this product fights pollutants from getting into your skin. Wow! This product is a must!!!!!

For Your Lips:

bare republic lips skin sunscreen sunblock suncare kasey ma thestylewright

Bare Republic Mineral Lip Balm SPF 30

PLEASE DON’T NEGLECT YOUR LIPS!!!! It is so common to overlook using sun protection on your lips! But skin cancer in this area is not uncommon. Everybody wants moist lips so we may as well protect them from the sun while we’re at it!!! Bare Republic’s Mineral Lip Balm is perfect for this job as its SPF protects your lips from sun damage while also hydrating. And of course, who doesn’t like the scent of a mojito 🙂

And there you have it! The best and most effective sun protection items on the market. Hope you guys enjoy shopping and protecting your skin for the rest of the summer as the heat of August rolls in.

Xoxo,

Becky

Dal Lake so fascinating, charming and spread with lotus and lilies as far as the eyes can see, the smell of tranquil water is so captivating that it aroused spirituality in me. The same has happened with me also during my stay on Dal Lake. I spent a whole day sailing in Shikara, shopping in floating market and staying in houseboat for a night. Just have a look at “Experience houseboat and Shikara” to taste my magnificent experience.

I love it! It’s crazy to me the amount of times people make comments about me putting sunscreen on my tan skin (I’m biracial)… but liiiiike that does not mean that I’m immune to the sun!

Especially living in Florida now, I have to put it on like crazy – even to walk to the store! Florida sun is an angry sun.

Do you know if the Moroccan Oil one smells as delicious as their products? I love the way their oil smells and alone I would buy this sun lotion for the smell lol

    I’m obsessed with sunscreen.

Beauty Counter makes great sunscreen. I have their stick formula and really enjoy it. I will have to give the one you mentioned a try. I’m also curious about Glossier. It seems to get rave reviews. I’m been much better about wearing my sunscreen though I do forget to put it on my lips. Got to get better at that.

I run in the sun and with my complexion I ignored sunscreen . Now I realize I am getting burned and there is peeling on my face. I need to use a sunscreen. I think I would try the Aveeno sunscreen as I already use the skin cream and its a winner. Thanks for the information

I will never, NEVER understand why people skip sun protection. No matter what the weather, it’s harmful and you should always protect yourself. The tweet at the beginning made me laugh, because that’s exactly how I think!

If you don’t use an SPF on your skin, at the very least you should always make sure there is one in your foundation. That’s one of my top priorities. I’m really curious about the brush on block! I’ve never seen that before.

Wearing sunscreen doesn’t make you “wimp” at all. I’m pale from staying out of the sun and always wearing sunscreen and I have hardly any wrinkles. I need to find the sunscreen for sensitive skin.

I had no idea there were so many different types of sunscreen. I always forget about the mineral variety and that I should be protecting my lips. For the Texas sun I use Neutrogena and I find that it really reduces skin damage!

    • TheStyleWright
      says:

Yes so many different types of sunscreen are out there! Texas sun is strong so I’m glad you’re protecting yourself 🙂
